The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) announced that the systematic replacement of air-conditioning units (ACU) across LRT Line 2 mainline stations is on track for completion by December 2025. The project, which began in August 2025, has already installed 115 out of 142 units, achieving an 81% completion rate. Replacement work continues at the remaining three stations of Anonas, Katipunan, and Santolan.
The project replaces outdated ACU units that use refrigerants with high global warming potential and have exceeded their economical service life. All new units comply with Republic Act No. 8749, or the Clean Air Act of 1999, and feature the latest air-conditioning technology designed for energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

The new air-conditioning units will provide a better working environment for over 200 station personnel who manage daily operations and fare collection across Line 2. These frontline employees work round-the-clock in three shifts. Reliable cooling system is essential for a healthy workplace and productivity, as required by Republic Act No. 11058 which mandates occupational safety and health standards.
“This project is our way to ensure that personnel at the revenue line can work efficiently in proper conditions,” said LRTA Administrator Hernando T. Cabrera. “A happy employee is a productive employee, and when our workplace is conducive, they can deliver better service to our riding public,” he added.

The project started on August 4, 2025, with a 180-day completion period ending January 30, 2026. LRTA is ahead of schedule, targeting to finish all installation work by December 2025, a month earlier than the original deadline.
This project aligns with LRTA vision to be the leading authority for the construction, operations, and maintenance of LRT systems, which enable safe, comfortable, and sustainable transportation in the country.
