The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) received an award for its utmost participation and significant contribution to the 33rd National Children’s Month celebration during the culminating activity held on November 26, 2025, at SM SkyDome, Quezon City. The Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) presented the award in line with this year’s theme “OSAEC-CSAEM Wakasan: Kaligtasan at Karapatan ng Bata Ipaglaban!”

Ma. Rosella O. Hugo, Division Manager A and chairman of LRTA Committee on Protection, Safety and Welfare of Children personally received the award on behalf of the Authority.

LRTA demonstrated its commitment to child welfare through the establishment of the Committee on Protection, Safety and Welfare of Children. The committee developed comprehensive child-focused policies and programs within the railway system, including mandatory child-safety assessments, establishment of child-friendly spaces, and coordination with government agencies for child protection programs.

The Committee closely worked with CWC through exploratory meetings and initiatives for the National Children’s Month celebration. LRTA conducted various activities throughout November, including a free ride day for children and youth below 18 years, installation of NCM banners and audio-video materials across all LRT-2 stations, and employee participation in the Blue Kada Friday Campaign to show solidarity with child protection advocacies.

LRTA also issued the Policy on the Protection, Safety, and Welfare of Children which institutionalized zero tolerance for child abuse and mandatory child protection training for all employees, contractors, and consultants. The policy aligns with national laws including the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act and international instruments such as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

“LRTA is committed to protecting the rights, safety, and future of our youth. We are honored to be recognized for our efforts in creating a safe, inclusive, and child-friendly transport environment,” said LRTA Administrator Atty. Hernando T. Cabrera. “This recognition affirms our commitment to make every station and train a place where children can travel with dignity and security.”

“This award reaffirms our committee’s initiatives to ensure that the railway system remains a safe space for children,” Hugo said. “We welcome suggestions from stakeholders and parents on how we can further improve our services and better protect the welfare of our children.”

This recognition affirms LRTA’s dedication to serving as a model government agency in championing children’s welfare. The Authority continues to work with stakeholders and government agencies to ensure the safety and protection of children in all railway facilities and surrounding communities.
