| The Light Rail
Transit Authority announced today (December 8) they reached a 10-year high
in train ridership for their Baclaran-Monumento System (Line 1), the third
highest in the public transportation agency?s more than 24-year history.
According to LRTA Administrator
Melquiades Robles, around 525,289 passengers took the LRT-Line 1 on Friday
(December 5).
?There?s no secret to why more
and more people are taking the train. It?s faster, cheaper and more
convenient,? Robles said.
Regularly the LRT-Line 1 is
fielding 30 trains per day, with a train interval of 2.5 to 3 minutes during
peak hours. Fares are only P12.00 for the first four stations and P15.00 for
the succeeding stations.
?Before, we thought it was only
due to the continuous oil price increases. But now that oil prices are going
down, we can safely surmise that train riding has already become a habit for
most Filipinos,? Robles said.
The highest yet-to-be surpassed
ridership for the LRT was recorded in December 16, 1996 with 542,605
passengers. The second highest was in December 17, 1997 with 529,242
passengers.
The LRTA is hoping to break the
all-time ridership record at the end of the year.
