Reprocessed Stock Tickets to Boost Supply of SV Tickets for Purple Line

July 31, 2006

The LRTA has recently completed the revival and modification of about 100, 000 tickets in stock to boost the supply of stored value (SV) tickets for the MRT Line 2 or Purple Line system.

The stocked tickets were previously used during President Joseph Estrada’s incumbency.

In the past months, there has been a surge in the demand for more SV tickets but the LRTA reportedly only has about 20, 000 tickets in stock.

Of the estimated 150, 000 passengers per day, who are using the Purple Line trains, about 30-35% or 50, 000-60, 000 commuters are SV ticket users.

Since last year, the LRTA has tried to utilize the so-called Erap tickets in stock and offered to outsource the reprocessing of the said tickets but no company had the capability to perform the said process.

LRTA Administrator Melquiades Robles said it was only through the initiative of the LRTA management that they were able to internally experiment the effective reprocessing of the said tickets.

“A month ago, we had a breakthrough. We found out that some of the tickets used by the Line 2 Operations and Engineering Department had proven to be acceptable by our machines. This started the revival and modification of the Erap tickets in stock,” Robles announced.

With this move, the LRTA is also expected to save as much as P950, 000 from its usual ticket supply purchasing. Tickets are purchased at P9.50 per ticket from winning bidders.
