In line with the continuing education program for staff and personnel leading to better public service, the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) has invited an expert on Triage and other disaster management areas to give a seminar to its staff especially the front line personnel.

Romeo Almazan Bituin, MD, MHA, a Health Emergency Management Staff Coordinator, assigned at the Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital by Department of Health recently conducted a brief seminar on Triage and other disaster management areas.

The brief seminar was conducted at LRTA Central Station on Arocerros street, Manila last June 30, 2006. Present during the seminar were personnel from the Station Operations Section, Train Operations, Civil Security, RSAU, and from the Customer Relations Office, from both Line 1 and Line 2.

There was a showing of several, brief and concise PowerPoint presentations with the doctor explaining each slide. A question and answer portion was then conducted after every presentation.

The emphasis was placed on the Triage System. This is a classification system wherein victims are color coded for quick medical decisions. The internationally accepted colors of the Triage system are red, yellow, green, and black. Red is designated for the worst cases, while yellow is for the least serious. Green is for those wounded but can still walk, while black is for the dead ones.

The seminar prepares the staff, especially front line personnel in dealing with emergencies that may arise out of earthquake, civil disorder, among others.

The audience listens intently while Dr. Bituin explains the need for the Triage system for disasters involving large casualties. Triage, a French word, meaning to sort, helps doctors in responding faster and better to victims needs because of the color coding they use in the system.
