Northbound passengers now
find it easier to go up at the platform area of LRT Baclaran Station
Illegal street vendors crowding the Light Railway Transit Authority at the
Baclaran Terminal Station left the area after LRTA Administrator Rafael
Rodriguez issued a directive Tuesday.
Lawyer Rodriguez said the special clean-up drive was meant to provide ease
and comfort to LRTA's half a million commuters.
Hernando Mojares, 29, a Quezon City resident, commended the LRTA
administration for being sensitive to the comfort of the riding public, even
as he recalled the inconvenience of being in the pool of street vendors at LRT station while reaching the Baclaran Church.
Mojares observed that traffic flow in the "cleaned areas have improved
enormously? referring to the area fronting the stairways of the stations."
The clearing operation is a joint effort of the LRTA Security Group headed
by Col. Adelo Jandayan, Safety and Security Manager, Flaviano Satsatin,
Security Consultant, Major Charlie Umayam, Commanding Officer of Rail
Special Action Unit and the Pasay City Hall Demolition Team.
Stressing that LRTA's goal is "to provide ease and comfort to our commuters
taking the Baclaran-Roosevelt route," Rodriguez noted that the advent of the
Christmas season is expected to bring about a crowd of pedestrians and
several people from all walks of life in the station.
The number of vendors of bags, shoes and other goods would usually double if
not triple at the onset of Christmas, crowding LRTA premises especially
around the Baclaran station.
Rodriguez said the LRT Security Group will strictly monitor the area to
ensure its safety from the illegal vendors.
