LRTA braces for “Oplan Ligtas na Krismas”
In line with the Department of Transportation and Communications’ ‘Oplan Ligtas na Krismas’, the Light Rail Transit Authority tightens its security measures to ensure a safe and convenient journey for all holiday makers during the Christmas break.
Administrator Rafael S. Rodriguez instructed all LRTA personnel to strictly implement the “no inspection, no entry” policy and constantly remind the riders that wrapped gift items are subject for inspection.
“We need to ensure the safety and security of the passengers that’s why we require the passengers to open their wrapped gifts for inspection,” Rodriguez stressed.
He also mentioned the deployment of train inspectors who will monitor the train drivers as well as the activities of the passengers inside the trains. Ambulant vendors and additional tickets are also available whenever the need arises.
Rodriguez added that LRTA will close earlier than the regular schedule on December 24 and December 31, 2011. He said that the number of trains in the LRT Line 1 and Line 2 would be reduced on the said dates in anticipation of the significant decline in the number of commuters.
Based on LRTA Readership/Traffic Data for the last five years, from 2006 to 2010, ridership goes down during the holiday season.
“It’s the time of the year when Filipino families reunite and enjoy the spirit of Christmas,” DOTC Secretary Mar Roxas said, “DOTC is playing an active role in ensuring that our people can travel back to their respective hometowns and be with their loved ones safely, in the most convenient manner.”
‘Oplan Ligtas na Krismas’ is part of DOTC’s continuing program to provide people with safe, affordable, and reliable transportation during lengthy holiday breaks such as All Saint’s Day, Holy Week and the opening of school classes.”
