DOTC to offer free MRT-LRT rides for Red Cross and Tahanan Walang Hagdanan Racers on Sunday
Manila, Philippines – The Department of Transportation and Communications threw its full support behind the Philippine Red Cross’ Million Volunteer Run and the Tahanang Walang Hagdanan’s Access 2020 Race to Success, both kicking-off on Sunday, December 4, by offering free rides to all participants of the event at the MRT-3 and LRT1/LRT2 lines.
Participants just need to wear a red shirt provided by the Red Cross to avail of the free train rides, from 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM the same day. The Tahanang Walang Hagdanan participants, including Persons with Disability (PWD), will be provided access to the MRT3 (from Cubao to Taft) and the LRT line 1 (from EDSA to United Nations).
The Red Cross event will be held in all key cities and municipalities nationwide. It will be the largest gathering of volunteers ever staged in the country, targeting one million volunteer runners nationwide.
The Tahanang Walang Hagdanan will be an all-day event where racers will be using access points of the MRT line, and determine how long will it take for a PWD to travel from origin to final destination.
“We are pleased to partner with the Red Cross in staging this humanitarian event that hopes to awaken the volunteer in every Filipino,” DOTC secretary Mar Roxas said. “Similar to the Red Cross, one of our mandates is to help victims during calamities such as typhoons and flooding, and ensuring the safety of every individual by way of emergency transportation and rescue operations.”
The Tahanang Walang Hagdanan Race to Success is supported by the National Organizing Committee, where DOTC is a significant member. This national racing event will be held in major parts of the metropolis with the use of public transport to promote tourism and PWD accessibility.
“We support Tahanang Walang Hagdanan event as part of this year’s celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disability,” Roxas said. “The DOTC’s mantra is to provide reliable, safe and affordable public transport to everyone, including PWDs.”
