More than 14,000 elderly Filipinos availed of the free ride given by the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) as part of the celebration of the Elderly Filipino Week on October 08, 2011.
More than 10,000 passengers took the Line 1 route (Baclaran to Roosevelt) while 3,457 availed of the free ride in Line 2 (Santolan to Recto). Presently, LRT has an average of 13,000 senior citizen patrons daily.
“Judging by the number of senior citizens who availed of the free ride services, the program was a success and we are very glad to have been of service to our elderly.”, said LRTA Spokesperson Atty. Hernando T. Cabrera.
He also lauded the LRT employees who rendered assistance to the elderly during the said activity, adding that the agency recognizes the contribution of senior citizens in nation building.
Presently, senior citizens are enjoying a twenty percent (20%) discount in fares, and are provided priority express lanes at ticket booths, priority service/assistance and courtesy seats inside the first cars of trains.
On the other hand, a total of 4,284 senior citizens availed of the free ride in MRT 3 (Taft-EDSA to North Avenue).
