As the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Authority beefs up new passenger safety measures along the revenue lines, it is also urging the commuting public to strictly observe safety precautions to avoid accidents and delays in train operations.
"We have observed several passenger practices which are dangerous to their safety. For example, some passengers force themselves to board the trains even as the warning buzzers have been signaled. They force train doors to open which will not only result in accidents but also disrupts train operations," Rafael S. Rodriguez, LRTA administrator, said.
LRTA also reminded passengers to keep distance and keep hands off train doors as the coaches travel. Constant reminders inside the trains through a public address system are made to remind the passengers of safety precautions.
With the onset of the rainy season, LRTA is watching closely accidents due to slippery floors. To avoid slippage accidents, LRTA has treated known slippery areas with anti-slipping chemicals.
"Additional security personnel are also being deployed in all LRT stations to provide security and assistance to passengers especially during peak hours. Likewise, all obstructions in busy stations are being cleared to give passengers safer and easier access to the station premises. Periodic ocular inspections will also be conducted to make sure that all commercial stalls and kiosks do not block the passageway of the rail system," Rodriguez added.
