The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), in partnership with the NCR Regional Committee on Disability Affairs (RCDA) will be conducting a series of activities exclusively for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in observance of the 33rd National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week on July 17-20, 2011.
With the theme, "Making the Rights Real for Filipinos with Disabilities", an orientation on LRT Accessibility and Safety Features in compliance with BP 344 and a familiarization tour are set to be held on Wednesday for PWDs.
There will be more than 80 PWDs coming from different LGUs who will join the orientation and train ride which will start from Santolan Station to Legarda Station.
The activity aims to bring in to light the responsibility of every citizen to uplift the economic and social conditions of the PWDs and stimulate public awareness on problems on disability as declared in the Proclamation No. 361.
As such, the LRT implemented the passenger segregation scheme in 2002 wherein the first coach of the train is reserved for women, elderly, pregnant women, passengers with children and PWDs to ensure their safety and security.
Physically disabled passengers on board are also provided space for their own wheelchairs and mobility tools alongside the fiberglass reinforced plastic benches.
The LRT is also giving 20% fare discount to PWDs when they take a train ride.
Atty. Rafael Rodriguez, Administrator, said that LRTA is exerting all measures and efforts to enhance its facilities including the proposed provision of public restrooms in LRT stations.
