For their own convenience,
rail commuters in Metro Manila, will soon be using smart cards in LRT 1, LRT
2, and MRT 3 at no additional cost.
Under the United Ticketing
System (UTS), commuters will be using a single, stored-value smart card for
all three rail transit lines as well as other rail lines that become
operational.
Department of Transportation
and Communications (DoTC) Secretary Leandro Mendoza, said selected gates at
LRT 1, LRT 2, and MRT 3 will be equipped with the contactless smart-card
"reader." Smart cards are different from the magnetic cards being used in
rail transit systems now because there is no need to insert them in the
gate's slots. Passengers don't have to take them out of their wallets or
bags. All they have to do is swing the wallet or bag before sensors and they
will automatically gain entry.
