The Light Rail Transit
Authority announced today that its Recto-Santolan (Line2) System has reached
its highest daily ridership since its first commercial operation in 2003.
LRTA Administrator
Melquiades Robles said around 249, 085 passengers took the LRT Line 2 train
last Friday (July 2), which was 3.3% higher than its previous record of
241,125 set in December 4, 2009.
As of the first semester
(January-June, 2009), the LRT Line 2 has a daily average of 193, 284, with
12 trains running during peak hours.
Robles said they are
happy with this increase in ridership as this shows more people now chose to
ride their trains.
Robles also said there is
no need yet to increase the number of trains it fields daily as the current
load factor or level of passenger comfort is still a comfortable 35%.
LRTA's Line 2 system has
a total of 16 trains available, which can carry a maximum of 730,240
passengers daily.
Robles however lamented
that more people belonging to the middle class and upper classes have yet to
ride the train.
"A closer look at the
demographics of our riders would reveal that our riders are mostly students, laborers, and rank- and-file employees," Robles said, adding that the more
well-off still prefer to use their cars despite the heavy traffic.
"We hope that in the near
future we will see both the rich and the poor standing side by side with
each other inside the LRT," Robles said.
